Volunteer Of The Month | | September 2017 | Mary MetropulosProgram Assistant | | Why We Love Mary Metropulos: The great and wonderful Mary Metropulos began volunteering at Girls Inc. in January 2017. As a physical therapist for over 30 years, she now works in special education for Jeffco Public Schools, working with students with disabilities. Mary has worked with all grades at Girls Inc., but started as a lead tutor with 3rd graders. This fall she will work with 1st and 2nd graders with their homework and we are incredibly thankful for her expertise as a lifelong volunteer in her community! "I feel very strongly about gender equality and the need to help girls develop into confident, capable and independent women." - Mary Metropulos
FUN FACT: Mary went to high school in Hawaii and has been to all 50 states!
Who's The STRONGest Person You Know: My best friend, Ann. She has experienced the death of 3 fiances - one man died in a car accident and the other two from cancer. She quit her job each time to care for the men with cancer until they died. After each time she resumed her life and continued to be one of the kindest, most caring and positive people that I know. She somehow manages to remain joyful and hopeful. She is an inspiration to me and I am proud and grateful to be her friend.
What's The SMARTest Thing You Have Ever Heard: We are never too old to learn, or try, something new.
What's The BOLDest Thing You Have Ever Done: When I was 23 years old, I moved from Arizona to Philadelphia to experience living in a big east coast city. I got a job at an inner city hospital and lived in an apartment nearby. It was a very new and intimidating experience for me, but ultimately one that I learned from and enjoyed immensely. It is also where I met my husband. |
